Piece by Piece

June 3–30, 2024

Opening Reception: June 4, 6–8PM

In a world where social media encourages us to curate and share fragmented versions of ourselves, I am drawn to the parallels between this modern phenomenon and the fragmented remnants of ancient Greek and Roman sculptures. My work explores the complexities of identity and representation in the digital age, questioning how our online personas may not fully encapsulate who we are. Inspired by the fragmented sculptures of antiquity, I aim to evoke a sense of incompleteness and ambiguity in my paintings, prompting viewers to reconsider the narratives constructed around individuals in the digital realm and uncover what lies beyond the curated images and posts.

As a member of the queer community, I am particularly attuned to the importance of preserving and uncovering queer history. Throughout the ages, LGBTQIA+ individuals have faced erasure and censorship due to societal biases. My work serves as a testament to the resilience of queer identities, challenging the historical narratives that have been shaped by prejudice and discrimination.

A crucial part of my artistic process involves regularly sketching friends. This practice isn't solely about refining my craft; it's a meaningful opportunity to connect with those around me, forging new bonds and deepening existing friendships. My subjects come from various spheres of my life—some are close friends or acquaintances, others I've encountered through online communities, and occasionally, I'm fortunate enough to capture fellow artists and mentors. With these portraits, I aim not only to celebrate the beauty of the human form but also to preserve a snapshot of the individuals who enrich my life and contribute to our community's history.

Through my art, I invite viewers to contemplate the complexities of identity, representation, and history in the digital era. By embracing the fragmented nature of both our online personas and ancient artifacts, we can begin to unravel the multifaceted stories that make us who we are.

Fragments

Two Statue Torsos (Minotaur), 2022, oil on canvas, 48”x48”

May 18th – July 8th

Opening Reception: May 19th, 6 – 8 PM

Fragments explores storytelling through the human form in both ancient and modern iterations, revealing fascinating commonalities between the two. Artist John MacConnell sketches and paints Classical sculptures alongside contemporary individuals, linking mythmaking in the Greco-Roman world with our current society.

Using sculptures from the sanctuary at Delphi and the Acropolis in Athens as reference, MacConnell poses his models in the contrapposto forms of Hellenic statues. The figures are then fragmented, as ancient sculptures often are after thousands of years, missing an arm, leg, or even head, as if time and use had worn them away.

Through the framework of these contemporary bodies juxtaposed with ancient sculptures, MacConnell examines the narratives we create about ourselves and others. Much as the stories we know about heroes and statesmen from antiquity are built from bits of information, our online personas are an amalgamation of pieces – curated selections from various social media accounts and dating profiles. MacConnell asks how the people of today will be remembered – what myths about us will develop from our fragmented digital footprints?

SoHo Project Space: Taking Pleasure in a Likeness

February 3 - February 13, 2022

Opening Reception: February 3, 6 – 8pm
Exhibition walk-through: February 6, 3pm
Moderated talk-back: February 13, 3pm

The art of John MacConnell emphasizes above all, the realistic portrayal of the world around him, taking pleasure in a likeness, whether it be of a landscape or a friend’s portrait. Seen as a successor of the great portrait artists such as Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres and John Singer Sargent, MacConnell's work demonstrates remarkable technical facility, particularly noted for his use of graphite, as if it were paint applied with a brush.

MacConnell's portraits display numerous variations in technique and style. There are quick sketches of full-length nudes done in ink-pen (some with the addition of watercolor) which are full of vitality and render distinctive personalities. There are the delicately nuanced graphite works in which the models seem caressed by soft light filtered through gauzy curtains—a light that is truly palpable, and finally, there are the charcoal renderings of sitters who stare back at the viewer with a compelling intensity.

In John MacConnell; Taking Pleasure in a Likeness, forty of MacConnell's works are brought together for the first time in this inaugural exhibition of the SoHo Project Space.

“Queerness exists in the gray areas, much like the nature of human sexuality itself. Challenging, reordering, and defying boundaries is inherent to the nature of being queer. Living on the cusp, in the “in between,” provides us a unique perspective. There are aspects of the human experience that we all experience the same. We all have a desire for intimacy, connection, to appreciate the beautiful (whatever that means to us). The aim of our exhibition is to increase queer visibility. To reshape boundaries in the direction of inclusion and acceptance.”

May 28 - June 3, 2015
Opening Reception: May 28th, 6-9PM
Gallery is open by appointment only.

A series of life-sized drawings exploring the concepts of social media, reality, and hero worship.

I've become very active in Instagram and have, over the last year, grown a large following and made quite a few friends through the app. Through this process I've made many observations on how users (myself included) act and interact with the app and each other.

Instagram's way of micro-blogging really makes someone feel connected with the people they're following. As "insta" suggests the posts make you feel like you're in the moment with the person you're following. The interaction makes you feel like you know the person and are experiencing the moments with them. Through their image and text, you learn their expressions, tones, and emotions toward their lives.

Of course, Instagram (like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.) is not reality. It is only what the author of the page wants you to see. Despite that knowledge, it's hard to ignore the feeling like you know these people, many with fantasy-like lives. I've met quite a few of my followers. While none of them are lying about their lives, it becomes very obvious their online identity is only a small portion of their life.

The title INSTANT GRATIFICATION obviously comes partially from Instagram. The drawings, all of nude/semi-nude backs, represent the illusion of being exposed. In reality, the subjects faces and identity are still hidden. We don't really know who these individuals are. We are just drawn to and get satisfaction from the reality they have shown us one post, one instant, at a time.
